Student Underachievement in Higher Education: A Case Study of Correlation between Self-Esteem and Student Underperformance
Wiwik Andreani, Rani Agias Fitri, Akun, Fredy Purnomo, Ikhsan Bella Persada

Bina Nusantara University, Jakarta

Abstract

Student success is usually judged by the GPA they achieve periodically or at the end of their study. In fact, there are some students who cannot fulfill the set requirements and they belong to underachievers. This study aims to present a depth investigation on the correlation between underachievement in higher education and the underachievers^ self-esteem. These students are invited to produce a piece of creative writing and to complete a questionnaire on Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS), Academic Self-Esteem and Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (RSES). A follow-up interview is also done to find out their learning behaviors and their self-concept. This study is now still on process, and therefore the result could not be revealed. It is assumed that the lower self-esteem of the students, the more underachieving they are.
