Abstract

This article aims to explore the most historically valuable cultural heritage areas in Medan City, which is focused on zoning and delineation based on historical buildings. Essentially, the study outlines the mechanism and determination of zoning and delineation to ensure the sustainability of urban heritage. The determination of zoning and delineation is based on the most historically valuable areas to be maintained according to conservation principles based on national regulations. Medan Merdeka Square and its surrounding (MMS) is a historic inner-city area that is most likely to be preserved through integrating the concept of preserving historic city space with the dynamic context of contemporary urban design. The MMS area offers the enjoyment and pleasure of infrastructure through the commodification of historic buildings and modernity. Finally, the modernization of the city was affirmed without eliminating historical evidence from the past.
