Identification and Prevalence of Parasites in Dogs and Cats at Puskeswan Ragunan DKI Jakarta

Abstract

The aim of the research was to identify the type of parasite and the prevalence of parasitic infections in dogs and cats examined at the Diagnostic Laboratory at the DKI Jakarta Health Center. A total of 292 dog and cat samples in the form of earwax samples, skin scrapings, feces and blood tests were identified using native methods or direct examination under a microscope. The research results revealed that the type of parasite that infects dogs and cats is the ectoparasite Lynxacarus sp. as much as 1%, Otodectes sp. 10%, Sarcoptes scabiei 6%, and the endoparasite type Dipylidium sp. as much as 3%, Eimeria sp. 2%, Strongylus sp. 2%, Toxocara sp. 7%, as well as the blood test parasite Anaplasma sp. as much as 3%. In addition, it was found that the prevalence of parasitic infections in Puskeswan DKI Jakarta was 34%. The conclusion of this study is that the dogs and cats examined at the DKI Jakarta Health Center were infected with parasites with the usual infection prevalence rate or in the general category.
