Abstract

In the modern world, traditional games hold a unique position within the cultural heritage of the Malay Archipelago, encompassing regions such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and parts of Thailand and the Philippines. These games passed down through generations, serve not only as a source of entertainment but also as a representation of the values, customs, and social dynamics of various communities. However, rapid urbanization, globalization, and the influence of digital technologies have led to a decline in their popularity, particularly among youth. This study aims to explore the significance of preserving these games and the challenges involved in their conservation. A survey conducted among 166 university students from Malaysia and Indonesia revealed a high level of awareness about the importance of traditional games, yet a low frequency of participation. The findings suggest that incorporating traditional games into educational curricula and leveraging technology to modernize and promote these games could be effective strategies for preservation. This research advocates for collaborative efforts to maintain the cultural legacy of traditional games in the Malay Archipelago.
