Abstract

The current trend of digitalization in hospitals highlights the necessity for nursing education to adopt electronic nursing care systems, emphasizing the need to focus on information education and the development of electronic-based applications for practical nursing education. This study aimed to identify key data and assess nursing students^ perceptions regarding electronic nursing care systems in their education while also focusing on designing and developing the ^ENC^ electronic nursing documentation system. This study employed an agile methodology encompassing planning, design, development, testing, deployment, and review phases to create an electronic nursing documentation system, utilizing a mixed-methods research approach with an embedded design and purposive sampling to recruit 62 participants, with quantitative data collected via surveys and qualitative data from verbatim-transcribed interviews with 14 students. The research results indicated that 96.8% of respondents were in favor of implementing electronic nursing care, with 100% ready to use it. Commonly used by students and nurses were 27 diagnoses and 30 interventions. Qualitative findings revealed two main themes: challenges in managing paper-based nursing care and the necessity and readiness for electronic nursing care. Post-prototype completion, a survey with 30 nursing students assessed the application^s usability, quality, and satisfaction, showing both positive and negative impacts. The ENC application is anticipated to improve nursing care quality among students (74%) and reduce the burden of manual documentation (98%), with high satisfaction (93%) and error reduction (97%). Nevertheless, concerns included slow application speed (80%), uncertainty about immediate use (68%), and data leakage risks (86%). The ENC meets the needs of nursing students by easing the transition from paper-based to electronic documentation, enhancing acceptance and usage in clinical settings, improving efficiency, reducing manual workload, increasing productivity, and enhancing patient care quality, though attention to its negative impacts is essential
