Enhancing Sustainability through Human Resource Capabilities: A Comprehensive Framework for Energy Sector

Abstract

This study explores the strategic role of human resource capabilities in promoting sustainable energy practices, presenting an integrative framework based on a comprehensive literature review and identified research gaps. The literature underscores the importance of developing specific human resource skills and competencies in areas such as green technology, environmental management, and sustainable innovation. However, significant gaps remain in understanding the long-term impact of these capabilities, their integration with organisational sustainability goals, and their effectiveness across different cultural and organisational contexts. This research combines a quantitative survey and qualitative interviews with energy sector professionals to assess the state of human resource capabilities and their role in sustainability initiatives. The findings suggest that fostering a culture of continuous learning, providing targeted training programs, and encouraging employee engagement are critical to improving sustainability practices. Transformational leadership and a supportive organizational environment were also identified as key enablers in developing and enhancing these capabilities. The proposed framework recommends a holistic approach to strategic human resource capabilities, integrating flexible work policies, continuous professional development, and advanced HR technologies to support sustainable energy practices. This study offers valuable insights for energy companies looking to enhance sustainability efforts through effective human resource capability development, addresses existing gaps, and sets the foundation for future research and practical implementation.
