A comparison of rapid appraisal method and composite indicator in sustainability assessment of tourist destinations Diponegoro University Abstract The development of the tourism industry causes emergences of positive and negative impacts on tourist destinations. The development of the tourism industry has led the government to implement the concept of sustainable tourism. To assist the implementation of sustainable tourism, it is important to know the sustainability status of tourist destinations. A measuring tool that is suitable for the conditions of the tourist destinations is needed. The measuring tools are used to calculate sustainability index values and identify sensitive indicators. To complete the measuring tool, a method to process the measurement data is needed. The method used must be easy to use and provide accurate results. This study compares the RAP-Tourism data processing method with the composite indicator method. These two methods are compared because both methods are often used in sustainability assessments that have a multidimensional concept. The object of this assessment is the Baturaden tourist site. The results of the assessment using both methods obtain the same sustainability status but there are differences in the data processing methods used to calculate the sustainability index value. These two methods also use different analytical approaches in determining sensitive indicators that should be improved to increase the sustainability index of tourist destinations.
