Visual Characteristics of Monuments and Items in Medan City

Abstract

This research was conducted to understand more deeply about the works of monuments and monuments in the city of Medan. This research is very useful as a teaching material for sculpture for students of the Department of Fine Arts, especially for Fine Arts subjects, especially as teaching materials for local elements which have not been implemented optimally. This study aims: (1) to produce teaching materials for Sculpture with local content in the Department of Fine Arts, State University of Medan, (2) to find out in real terms the techniques, materials of manufacture, visualization of ideas, characteristics of forms. , setting the layout from the perspective of the observer. on the art of sculpture monuments and monuments in the city of Medan (3) knowing the meaning of visual symbols (symbolic meaning) contained in the works of art sculpture monuments in the city of Medan. This research was conducted in the city of Medan with a population of all monumental sculptures in the city of Medan (19 statues and monumental monuments). This study did not use a sample due to the heterogeneous nature of the population. Data was collected using the methods of observation, documentation and questionnaires/interviews. Questionnaire and interview methods are addressed to artists who create works of monuments and monuments that are the object of research. The data analysis used was descriptive qualitative with the type of taxonomic analysis that focused on the discussion on psychological aspects, namely symbolic meaning, visual descriptive, the results of the analysis concluded that the symbolic meaning of monumental statues in the city of Medan revealed the values of state ideology, history and culture. The meaning is contained in the form, color, size of the material and the location of the work which is based on the philosophy of Pancasila, the history of struggle and the culture of the Indonesian nation.
